About DSO

Down’s Syndrome Oxford is organised and funded by parents and supporters to provide information, help and activities for children with Down’s Syndrome and their families in the Oxfordshire area.

Members of DSO are children and adults with Down’s Syndrome, their parents, carers and supporters of the charity plus many key professionals such as physiotherapists, pre-school teacher councilors, teaching assistants, health visitors and other people working in the community – anyone with a passion for supporting people with Down’s Syndrome.

All the funds DSO receives are generated by fundraising efforts by members and the generosity of our supporters. There is no membership fee and most activities are free, although we may ask for a small contribution at some events. Our members include parents, grandparents, friends, teachers, teaching assistants, therapists, medical professionals – anyone with a passion for supporting people with Down’s Syndrome.

DSO was formerly the regional branch of the Down’s Syndrome Association and is now a registered charity in its own right. We work closely with all the professionals affiliated with the NHS Oxfordshire Down’s Syndrome Service.

As an organization we offer:

  • Practical assistance with educational and developmental issues via our weekly Early Development Groups (for pre-school under 5’s) and Primary Development Groups.
  • Lectures, seminars and workshops.
  • Supportive network of people with a wealth of information and experience.
  • Friendship via organized social events through our social clubs for preschoolers, primary aged children, 10+ children and 18+ adults.
  • Whole group social activities such as a Christmas Party, Summer Party and annual trips to theme parks.
  • Support and friendship for new parents through weekly Stay and Play sessions.
  • Three newsletters a year for all our members and supporters.
  • Information and resource sharing via our website.
  • Communication and discussion via Facebook, Twitter and other media.

We are always looking to expand our contact lists and anyone is invited to be a member…it's FREE. New volunteer helpers are always wanted and welcome!

We are always looking for financial support, and if you or you know of someone who would like to donate, please contact our Treasurer.
